Ignacio Rubio<\/strong> is associate director at DUR\u00c1N<\/a>, a Spanish auction house. Previously, he interned at various institutions and companies in both Spain and the United Kingdom, which gave him a strong understanding of the global art market.<\/p>\n

What are your main responsibilities in your current role?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In my current position (Deputy Director at DUR\u00c1N) I oversee processes before and after the auction \u2014 from consigning pieces to cataloguing, marketing, and sales. In addition to my main role, which is valuing contemporary art and paintings, I also advise sellers and new art collectors.<\/p>\n

What has been your professional path to get where you are today, and what were the biggest challenges you<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>ve faced?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I began with internships at various institutions and companies such as the exhibitions department of Fundaci\u00f3n Juan March<\/a>, the Museo Reina Sof\u00eda<\/a>, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection<\/a> in Venice, and the Contemporary Art Department at Sotheby’s<\/a>\u00a0in London. With this global perspective, I decided to return to Spain to work at Dur\u00e1n Subastas, where the proximity to artworks and collectors is much closer.
For me, the biggest challenge is happening now \u2014 taking the reins at the oldest auction house in Spain and contributing to its continued growth both artistically and technologically in the years to come.<\/p>\n

How do you stay inspired and up to date in a field that<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s constantly evolving? What platforms do you use to stay informed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From editorials on Artsy<\/a>, Artnet<\/a>, or OLOS<\/a>, to specialized Spanish market press, as well as content on platforms like TikTok or LinkedIn.
>Still, without a doubt, staying in touch with collectors and colleagues in the sector is the best way to identify trends and market demands.<\/p>\n

What skills or qualities do you consider essential to your success in the cultural sector?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Intuition, transparency, and perseverance.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give someone just starting their career in the cultural world?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

My recommendation is to invest in excellent training and work very hard. The rest is about meeting people, training your eye by visiting museums, fairs, and exhibitions \u2014 and of course, going to parties!<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n Arte y Subastas<\/a>\u00a0was founded in 1969 as a pioneering project in Spain to preserve art. In a challenging economic and cultural context, the Dur\u00e1n brothers succeeded in fostering collecting and auctions by offering transparency and trust to both buyers and sellers. To this day, the company continues to innovate and adapt to new technologies, expanding globally through its online platform. Digitalization has been key in bringing art to a wider audience, positioning Dur\u00e1n Arte y Subastas as a reference in the digital market and continuing its mission to make art accessible to all.<\/div>\n
