Pia Sophie Ottes is the director of Victoria Miro<\/a> gallery in Venice. She has built her career between Milan, Copenhagen, and London, where she worked at Christie\u2019shttps:\/\/www.christies.com\/en<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/b> before moving into the gallery sector. From Venice, she leads the presence of one of the most renowned galleries on the international art scene, combining strategic vision, operational management, and a deep passion for art.<\/p>\n

  1. What are your main responsibilities in your current role?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The programme and vision of Victoria Miro London and Venice is led by the Founder, Victoria Miro, President, Glenn Scott Wright and Partner Oliver Miro. As Director of the Venice gallery, I help shape the gallery’s presence in the city by supporting programming, cultivating commercial and institutional relationships, and leading strategic initiatives that drive visibility, sustainable growth, and alignment with wider business objectives. I oversee exhibition production and the artist residency program, manage the gallery spaces, and direct day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency, regulatory compliance, and close coordination with the main gallery. In addition, I develop and maintain partnerships across the art ecosystem and represent the gallery locally and internationally at art fairs and key industry events.<\/p>\n

    2. How has your professional background prepared you for your current role, and what has been your biggest challenge?<\/b><\/p>\n

    My career combines academic training in economics and marketing with hands-on experience in galleries and the auction world. After early roles in Milan and Copenhagen, I joined Christie’s in London, where I developed a strategic understanding of the art market before returning to the gallery sector for Victoria Miro in Venice, where I have been for 7 years now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    3. What keeps you inspired and informed in a career that is in constant evolution? What platforms do you use to stay informed?<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

    Through exchange with artists, curators, and peers, studio visits, and regular travel to exhibitions, biennials, and fairs. I stay informed via various international art publications and broader cultural and economic sources.<\/p>\n

    4. What abilities do you think have contributed to the success you have in your career today?<\/b><\/p>\n

    Strategic thinking, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Building trust, navigating complexity, and maintaining a long-term perspective have been key to sustaining meaningful relationships and projects.<\/p>\n

    5. What advice would you give to someone who is starting their career?<\/b><\/p>\n

    Be curious, reliable, and open to learning. Invest in relationships, understand both the creative and structural sides of the sector, and allow your path to evolve \u2014 careers in culture are rarely linear.<\/p><\/div>\n
