What are your main responsibilities in your current role?
As Executive Director of Untitled Art Fairs, my main role is to oversee the overall planning and execution of each edition of the fair. I ensure strategic goals align with the fair’s curatorial mission, manage the budgets, and lead the team to ensure each department is internally coordinated and equipped with the necessary tools to operate. Coordination with galleries, artists, and guest curators helps facilitate their participation. I also lead marketing and promotional efforts to attract visitors. In addition, my work is cultivating relationships and developing programming opportunities with local and international cultural partners, collectors, and art professionals to create a platform that engages both the art community and the public to learn, discover, and collect art.
What has your professional path been like to get to where you are today? What were the biggest challenges you faced?
I started my professional career working for commercial galleries in various capacities in London, Portugal, and New York. After arriving in New York, I began collaborating with the fair in the VIP Relations department, which I led from 2018 to 2021. Following that, I was promoted to Director of Development and Programming. I took on more responsibilities until I became the Executive Director in 2024.
Navigating the different art scenes from the UK to the US has certainly been a challenge, especially in regional markets like Portugal, but these experiences have helped me gain a deeper understanding of these various art ecosystems and develop new strategies in my current role.
For several years, I juggled different positions while also starting my own project. I was truly married to the art industry—working around the clock! Moving to the US has been a completely different chapter. But when you want to make it work, you always find a way.
How do you stay inspired and up-to-date in a field that’s constantly evolving? What are your go-to platforms for staying informed?
Podcasts are my thing. I’m a big fan of Art Tactic, The Art Angle, Talk Art, and more. Artnet News, Art News, The Gray Market, and The Wall Power keep me well informed. I’m obsessed with the opinion essays in Art Review, and Bloomberg helps me contextualize our industry within an ever-shifting economy. However, my key to staying up to date is traveling and experiencing each context in person.
What skills or qualities do you consider fundamental to your success in the cultural sector?
Fearlessness, passion, and dedication.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in the cultural sector?
Be persistent; it takes time, but working in the art field is one of the most rewarding jobs one can have. In honor of my grandfather, who always used to say, ‘The ox’s pace is slow but steady’—I’ve made that my motto.
