Do you want to get to know Juan Crespo?
Juan Crespo, Head Registrar, Exhibitions Coordinator & Associate Artist Liaison at Thaddaeus Ropac, shares his inspiring professional journey and his passion for contemporary art with us.
What are your main tasks in your current position?
One of my main tasks is the coordination and logistics of exhibitions that are part of the London program, art fairs in both the United Kingdom and Asia, as well as the support of certain artists and strategies related to them (artist liaison).
What has been your career path to get where you are today, and what were the biggest challenges you faced?
I have a Fine Arts degree and a MA (both from UB), a Master’s from Christie’s, and various work experiences collaborating with artists and contemporary art galleries, mainly in London.
How do you stay inspired and up-to-date in a constantly evolving field? What platforms do you use to keep informed?
The best way is through your network. Of course, you have to move around as much as possible, visit all the exhibitions, listen to podcasts, subscribe to newsletters or magazines, read essays and criticism, etc. There’s not much difference between hobby and work.
What skills or qualities do you consider essential for your success in the cultural sector?
First questioning what success is or isn’t. I suppose the keys are passion and tenacity (a bit cliché, right?).
What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the cultural world?
If you’re sure it’s something that fulfils you, double your efforts because it’s worth it. You see the world through different eyes, and there are still glimpses of freedom or ways to do things differently. If you’re not so sure, study law or finance and buy art. You still have time, and you’ll go to the parties anyway.
