What are your main responsibilities in your current role?
I’m the Editor and Founder of Culturalee, an arts and culture platform covering global cultural news and exhibitions. My role as Editor involves writing and publishing stories about arts and culture from around the world, interviewing artists and cultural innovators, editing articles submitted by contributors and overseeing the instagram platform. I also contribute to publications including the FT, Artlyst, Artplugged, FAD and Our Culture.
What has been your professional journey to where you are today, and what were the biggest challenges you faced?
I have a wealth of experience in the arts and culture industries including 6 years at Head of Global Creative PR at Saatchi & Saatchi and roles at Sotheby’s, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) and Timothy Taylor Gallery. And I’m a former Forbes Arts Contributor. My biggest challenge was starting Culturalee from scratch and building it up from ground zero to a platform with a global readership and over 270,000 monthly views.
How do you stay inspired and up to date in a constantly evolving field? What platforms do you use to stay informed?
I regularly visit art galleries, museums, art fairs, biennales, festivals, concerts and cultural events in the UK and around the world. This means I keep up to date with the lates cultural happenings on a local and international level.
What skills or qualities do you consider fundamental to your success in the cultural sector?
Hard work, curiosity and interest in arts, culture and the world around me, and ongoing networking and growing my community in real life and on social media platforms.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the cultural world?
If you want a career in the arts, it’s a good idea to study an art-related subject. I studied Art History and Italian, and I spent a year in Italy. Be prepared to work hard for not much money in order to get anywhere. When I started out as a writer, I contributed 100s of articles for free in order to build up my portfolio. Be determined, curious and don’t give up on your dream!
